Frequently asked questions

Can I get an NPI without a Social Security Number?

CMS Form CMS-10114 states that an SSN in block 18 is optional. If you do not provide an SSN, you must submit two acceptable proofs of identity with a paper application. Processing may take longer.

Do I need a Type 1 or Type 2 NPI as a resident?

Most residents and fellows need a Type 1 (Individual) NPI. Type 2 NPIs are for organizations such as hospitals and group practices.

Is an NPI the same as Medicare enrollment?

No. You obtain an NPI through NPPES. Medicare enrollment (PECOS) is a separate process. An NPI alone does not authorize Medicare billing.

What taxonomy code should a resident use?

CMS-10114 states that residents or interns without a license may select taxonomy code 390200000X (Student in an Organized Health Care Education/Training Program). Licensed attendings should use a specialty code.

How long does NPI processing take?

Processing times vary. Incomplete applications may be returned. Applications without an SSN may take longer while identity is verified. Allow adequate time before contacting the NPI Enumerator at 1-800-465-3203.
