How NPI Decoding Works

Provider Type: The first digit of an NPI determines the provider type:

1 - Individual Provider: Physicians, nurses, therapists, and other individual healthcare practitioners
2 - Organization: Hospitals, clinics, group practices, laboratories, and other healthcare organizations

Format: NPIs are always 10 digits. The standard display format is XXX-XX-XXXX, but the NPI itself contains no dashes or spaces.

Check Digit: The last digit is a checksum calculated using a modified Luhn algorithm, ensuring the NPI has a valid format.
